Nappy usage tips

Frequency of changing
It is recommended that nappies are changed every 3-4 hours during the day and always after a poo. This may equate to 8-12 or more nappy changes a day for a newborn and 5-8 for an older child. As babies begin to sleep through the night, a nappy can be boosted to allow it to be used for 12 hours or more (unless soiled). Nappy cream is not necessary at each change - only if there is redness.

Liners
No liner - may be easiest for newborn breastfed poo although nappies may stain. You may wish to rinse nappies in the toilet flush or add a prewash before the main washing cycle.
Washable fleece/polyester liner - allows the wetness through the material and acts as a stay dry liner against the skin. Solids remain on the top which can either be rinsed or will 'fall off' easily when the material is stretched (particularly poo from weaned babies). The use of fleece liners can also prevent your nappies from staining.
Disposable biodegradable liner - made of paper can usually be flushed (unless you have an antiquated plumbing system or septic tank) or bagged and binned. Be aware that some liners are disposable but not flushable.
Ultra liners - thicker and made of cellulose. They are biodegradable and it is recommended to bag and bin or compost them rather than flush. If ultra liners are wet and unsoiled they can be washed and reused 1-2 times.

Prevention of leaks
For two piece nappies (flat or shaped nappies plus an outer wrap) ensure that the absorbent nappy is fully tucked into the waterproof wrap running a finger around the elastic of the legs and waist after fitting. Ensure that the outer wrap is not too small or too large and move to a larger or smaller size if necessary. If over saturated, wetness will wick via the leg tapes. If this occurs, change the nappy more frequently or add extra absorbency to the nappy by using booster layers. It may be necessary to experiment with the number or type of booster (terry, hemp, bamboo or micro fibre) - particularly overnight. It is unusual for newborn babies' nappies to require boosting as they are changed on a regular basis.

For pocket nappies - avoid overstuffing as this may affect the fit around the waist and legs. If leaks occur consider using thinner more absorbent stuffing e.g. hemp, bamboo or microfibre boosters.

All in one nappies should have a snug fit around the waist and legs. Add absorbency to improve the fit if necessary.
